An In-Depth Look at the Public Health Objective in Modified Stage 2 of Meaningful Use
CMS released the final ruling for changes to the EHR Incentive Program and Meaningful Use on October 6, 2015, which included several changes to the Public Health objective. In previous years, the public health measures required “Ongoing Submission” to a public health agency. Starting in 2015, the wording was changed to “Active Engagement” to allow greater flexibility for eligible professionals (EPs) and eligible hospitals (EHs).

The Urology Center of Colorado Customizes Data From HIE to Improve Continuity of Care
The physician-owned specialty practice, The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC), receives pathology test results, radiology reports, and transcription notes from CORHIO to help with patient care coordination. With results pushed into their GE Centricity electronic health record system, TUCC is now able to better able to prepare for new patients and existing patients who’ve had a recent hospital encounter.
Penrose Hospital’s Emergency Department Uses High-Tech Systems to Deliver High-Quality Care
Penrose Hospital, located in the heart of Colorado Springs and part of Centura Health, has participated in the CORHIO health information exchange (HIE) since 2011. The hospital has a real-time, electronic connection to the CORHIO network, which allows community healthcare providers to access information on shared patients when coordinated care is delivered in outpatient settings such as physician offices and skilled nursing centers. In March of 2014, Penrose Hospital expanded its participation with CORHIO by implementing HIE patient query access in the Emergency Department (ED).

Colorado Springs Pulmonary Consultants Elevate Specialty Care with HIE
For more than 30 years, Colorado Springs Pulmonary Consultants (CSPC) has been serving patients across southern Colorado. Located on the Penrose Hospital campus, the practice is comprised of six board-certified pulmonary physicians and a certified nurse practitioner. The practice provides state-of-art care, which includes the use of electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchange (HIE). CSPC connected to the CORHIO HIE in early 2012 and receives their patients' clinical results directly into their Greenway EHR system.
South Metro Fire Rescue Authority Innovates With Health IT
South Metro Fire Rescue Authority (SMFRA) is a big operation. They’re the emergency and prevention service provider in south Denver for close to 200,000 residents. With 17 stations, 65 vehicles and more than 300 firefighters, there are a lot of moving parts. The leadership at SMFRA are always looking for ways to improve processes, like staff training, and ways to take the best care of people during emergency calls. Late last year, they joined the CORHIO network so they could receive real-time hospital and lab information via the secure web portal.

Sustainable Growth Rate
With the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) repeal passing earlier this year there was a collective sigh of relief. The 21% cut to Medicare payments was permanently taken off the table. With the passage of the SGR fix CMS has also put a plan in place to simplify the Quality Reporting program.
