Five Communities and Hundreds of Thousands of Patients to Benefit from Addition of Twelve Hospitals to HIE

Centura Health, Colorado's largest health system, has announced its commitment to join CORHIO's health information exchange (HIE) network to improve patient care, and the quality and safety of health care services across the state.  Centura Health signed a 'participant agreement' with CORHIO and will have 12 hospitals live on the HIE by this September.

In its most recent fiscal year, Centura Health reported more than 83,000 hospital admissions and over 340,000 ER visits, so its participation in the HIE will provide benefit to hundreds of thousands of patients across the state.

Additionally, Centura Health's participation in the HIE will ensure that physicians and other health care providers have instant access to patient information in order to better coordinate care between inpatient and outpatient settings.  The health system has 6,000 affiliated physicians and they will benefit most due to the number of patients going between their offices and the hospital for tests and procedures.

"Centura Health's partnership with patients and communities to promote health and wellness is very much aligned with our goal of enabling health professionals to deliver high quality, cost effective patient center care at the right time and place to all communities across the state" said Janice Whittleton, director of development and outreach at CORHIO. "With the addition of Centura Health to CORHIO's network, there are now 25 hospitals participating with CORHIO."

Centura Health operates 12 hospitals in five communities in Colorado that will connect to the HIE by September, including:

Boulder County:

  • Avista Adventist Hospital, Louisville

Colorado Springs:

  • Penrose Hospital
  • St. Francis Medical Center

Denver Metro:

  • Littleton Adventist Hospital, Littleton
  • OrthoColorado Hospital, Lakewood
  • Parker Adventist Hospital, Parker
  • Porter Adventist Hospital, Denver
  • St. Anthony Hospital, Lakewood
  • St. Anthony North Hospital, Westminster

Pueblo/Southern Colorado:

  • St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, Pueblo
  • St. Thomas More Hospital, Cañon City

Summit County:

  • St. Anthony Summit Medical Center, Frisco

Through use of CORHIO's network, Centura Health's physicians and other medical care providers will have instant access to important health information about their patients, including lab test and pathology results, x-ray, MRI and other imaging reports and physician transcription reports. Later this year, the network is scheduled to be upgraded to include patient medication lists, allergies and immunizations as well as lab and imaging orders. The data available to medical professionals about each patient in the network will grow each time they visit their physician and additional information is recorded electronically.

Physicians and other outpatient care providers with an electronic health record (EHR) can receive their patient data from the HIE seamlessly into their system, and those who do not have an EHR can access the data with an easy-to-use, Web-based portal.
