In the near future, participants of the CORHIO Health Information Exchange (HIE) will begin to seamlessly receive their patients’ lab test results from LabCorp and Quest Diagnostics, the two largest laboratories in the nation, as well as Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories (PAML) a large, regional lab. LabCorp, Quest and PAML – which has partnered with Centura Health to deliver lab services through a joint venture called Colorado Laboratory Services (CLS) – recently signed ‘letters of intent’ (LOI) with CORHIO. When the labs connect to the CORHIO network, participating providers will access their patients’ lab results seamlessly through the CORHIO HIE portal or through their connected electronic health record (EHR) system.
With the LOIs executed, CORHIO is currently collecting technical specifications from LabCorp, PAML and Quest Diagnostics, and is researching the most effective methods for connecting their systems to the HIE. CORHIO anticipates that beginning in Spring 2012, care providers connected to CORHIO will receive patient lab test results from these labs seamlessly and securely through the HIE.
By using HIE, providers will access lab results from multiple labs within a single system, eliminating the need for multiple logins to different lab portals. Additionally, CORHIO users that have an EHR will not have to pay for implementation or ongoing maintenance of point-to-point interfaces between their EHR and each lab database.
The addition of major labs joining CORHIO also increases accuracy of data, enhances patient safety, and reduces costs for patients by eliminating redundant testing.
