This vital medical hub in southeast Colorado is now sending patient test results and other information into the Community Health Record for providers across the state to access.

CORHIO is pleased to announce that Prowers Medical Center in Lamar, Colo. is now sending ADT (admit, discharge, transfer) and lab information to the CORHIO Health Information Exchange. This high-quality award-winning critical access hospital is operated by the Prowers County Hospital District. Close to the borders of New Mexico, Kansas and Oklahoma, Prowers Medical Center is a general medical and surgical hospital with 25 beds and more than 6,000 ER visits per year. They offer both inpatient services (surgery, skilled nursing, birthing center) and outpatient services (urology, pulmonology, cardiology, physical therapy) and an annual health fair for the community, with many free and low-cost screenings available.

This project was made possible in part by the Colorado Care Connections Program, which is enabling bidirectional health information exchange in the state. Prowers Medical Center received financial assistance to increase their participation with CORHIO as part of this program, as well as the Women’s Wellness Connection program from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

“The Colorado healthcare community benefits a great deal from critical access hospitals making their data available more broadly – particularly as patients move around, travel and receive care at different locations. We are so pleased that Prowers Medical Center has successfully connected to CORHIO and made their lab and hospital data a part of the Community Health Record,” says Scott Wallace, CORHIO Outreach and Development Manager. “We are committed to connecting every single critical access hospital in the state to the network, as we understand the tremendous value these essential rural providers have in our community.”

“Being in rural Colorado, we struggle with the real issue of patients needing to travel all over the state for healthcare. Some of the more advanced procedures our patients need take place in Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver,” says Jason Spano, Director of Information Technology at Prowers Medical Center. “Sharing information has become a very important initiative for us, and joining up with CORHIO has made this possible. We are excited that we can finally start sharing information to other providers who need it.”

Data Immediately Available in PatientCare 360

Prowers Medical Center data is now currently available within the searchable PatientCare 360 web portal (Community Health Record). “Ultimately, this is a huge win for everyone. For the patient, faster access to the data means less waiting and faster care,” says Spano. “With all the right data in an easy to find format, this should make all other aspects of patient care go more smoothly as well. From chart documentation to billing, I feel this will add accuracy as well as speed up the overall process.”

For healthcare providers who have previously requested to receive Prowers Medical Center data through their EHR connection, your CORHIO representative will be contacting you in the upcoming months to schedule an upgrade to your interface.
