Emergency Physicians Study Lack of Information at the Point of Care
Date: August 26th, 2015Topics: HIE, Emergency Services, Patient CareIn a paper published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, a group of emergency doctors from the American College of Emergency Physicians discuss the lack of patient information at the point of care, as patients often receive care from multiple providers in multiple settings. This can lead some emergency physicians to feel like they’re “flying blind” with no patient history, such as information on medication allergies.

Hilltop Family Physicians, Summit Medical Clinic and Metro Community Provider Network – all current participants in the CORHIO HIE network – are working with CORHIO’s Transformation Support Services team to achieve medical home recognition by NCQA.

The connectivity between the HIEs allows discrete data to transmit from one HIE to another, and route to authorized health care providers within their EHR workflow and is also available via KHIN’s secure, web-based patient query portal. Utilizing this type of advanced technology allows for a more robust type of exchange than connectivity limited to Direct message exchange.

CHP collectively provides care to more than 143,000 patients.

All of South Metro Fire Rescue Authority’s firefighters are trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and more than a third are paramedics, which requires a higher level of training. To prepare for ongoing medical team training, previous to joining CORHIO, SMFRA had to call hospitals and ask for follow-up patient information.

Those criteria included timeliness, transmission to follow-up care provider and inclusion of standard data points. The results showed problems in all three of these areas.
