New Children’s Hospital Colorado in Highlands Ranch Now Connected to CORHIO

Their second location, Aztec Urgent Care in Aztec, New Mexico, is also accessing some patient data via the CORHIO network because their labs are processed at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.

A report by Frost and Sullivan cites a predicted 221 percent growth in the market to nearly $900 million by 2017. The report also found that half of U.S. hospitals and 40 percent of office-based physicians have a portal through their electronic health record (EHR) or practice management system. But many are not using that technology for various reasons, such as cost, interoperability or workflow issues and limited functionality, so they are seeking alternative options.

Hospitals need 90 days of data to attest next year. Eligible hospitals can complete their attestation to Stage 2 as early as January 2014, which means the early adopters are collecting data now to be ready.

One of those is Rio Grande Hospital, a 17-bed CAH in Del Norte that serves residents in the western part of the San Luis Valley. The other is Estes Park Medical Center, a 25-bed CAH in southwestern Larimer County at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. Both hospitals serve small towns and remote areas of the state and are vital to the residents and visitors in their areas.

Colorado Medicaid providers and hospitals have received more than 1,500 incentive payments, totaling more than $62 million. In both programs, Stage 1 is open, so many are attesting to meaningfully using their electronic health systems for the first time.

In addition to the 1,031 providers currently connected to the HIE, nearly 1,000 more are in the process of connecting. More than 71% of the office-based providers participating are physicians, though there are also Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Nurse Midwives also participating.

Exempla Healthcare, an affiliate of SCL Health System, operates Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, and Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver. With this agreement, now all Colorado hospitals with more than 100 licensed beds are now connected or are in the process to connect to an HIE network.

Through the HIE connection, patients who are being transferred from another participating Colorado acute-care hospital to Craig Hospital will have smoother transitions because the details of their electronic medical records will immediately follow them as they transition facilities.

Date: July 23rd, 2013Topics: SNF, Long-Term Care, Home Health, Transitions of CareThe Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) awarded CORHIO a Health Information Exchange (HIE) Challenge Grant in 2011 to help long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) providers adopt HIE technology to improve care and reduce costs. In particular, the program focused on patients discharged from hospitals and their transition to the care of a skilled nursing facility, long-term acute care facility, assisted living, home health, or hospice. Through the grant, which is now closed for applications, CORHIO is offering compensation to 119 organizations for participating and meeting the qualifications of certain milestones, such as reporting data on hospital readmissions.
